Description

A disorder where the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside of the uterus. The tissue can grow on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, outer wall of the uterus, intestines, or other organs in the belly.

US Cases: 787,000 - 825,000 [Eisenberg 2017]. 10.5 to 11.0 cases per 1,000 in women of childbearing age (75 million in the US).

Typical Age of onset

Age of onset is not clear because research indicates it can take an average of 7 years from the onset of symptoms to the diagnosis of the disease.  Researchers believe the age of onset is typically from 15 to 35 years of age (Global Study of Women's Health).  

Symptoms

  • Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)

  • Pain during or after intercourse

  • Pain with bowel movements or urination

  • Excessive bleeding

  • Infertility

  • Fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, constipation, bloating or nausea during menstrual periods
