Description
Bickerstaff's brainstem encephalitis (BBE) is an immune disorder of unknown cause. It involves specific anti-bodies that attack parts of the brain. It is characterized by acute, progressive brain dysfunction. Associated with Cerebellar Ataxia.

Prevalence
The precise incidence and prevalence of BBE is currently unknown. A nationwide survey of patients in Japan with BBE estimated that the annual incidence of BBE affects approximately 100 individuals [Koga 2013]
Notes:
1. Overlap with other antibody syndromes makes it hard to diagnose and distinguish.
2. Bickerstaff Encephalitis is very rare.
